Vintage Furniture & Bespoke Design

Haberdashery Counter · London Café & Bakery
An original shop haberdashery counter transformed with reclaimed Iroko and vintage American ceiling tiles to create a unique feature counter for a London café and bakery.

Starting with an original vintage shop haberdashery counter, we set about transforming the piece into a unique feature counter for a café and bakery in London.

We designed and made a new solid timber top and plinth from reclaimed Iroko, chosen for its rich colour and warmth alongside the aged timber of the original counter.

For the sides and back, we sourced a collection of reclaimed American pressed-metal ceiling tiles, each with its own layers of worn paint, surface markings and patina. The individual tiles were carefully arranged and fixed by hand, wrapping the counter in a patchwork of pattern and texture.

The contrast between the decorative, time-worn metal and the warmth of the reclaimed Iroko gave the counter an entirely new identity, while preserving the original drawers and character that made the piece worth saving in the first place.

A meeting of materials and histories — taking an original shop fitting and giving it a new life in a very different setting.
