A beautifully proportioned British oak chest of drawers dating from the Art Deco period, circa 1930s.
Constructed predominantly from oak, the chest has a wonderfully warm golden colour with particularly attractive grain across the three graduated drawer fronts. Its restrained design is typical of the more understated side of British Art Deco furniture, combining traditional cabinetmaking with the cleaner, streamlined forms emerging during the interwar period.
The most distinctive feature is the beautifully rounded front corners, which flow down into a substantial stepped plinth base. A gently raised gallery runs along the back of the top, while the otherwise simple façade allows the figuring of the oak to take centre stage.
Each of the three drawers retains a set of unusual carved wooden knobs, decorated with a small radiating pinwheel or spiral motif. We believe these are likely original or at least contemporary with the chest and they add a lovely decorative detail without overwhelming its simple form.
The drawers are traditionally dovetailed and constructed using secondary timber internally, indicative of good-quality British furniture production of the period. They are generously sized, with increasingly deep storage from top to bottom.
The chest has been sympathetically restored while retaining the character acquired through many decades of use. There are minor marks, variations in colour and other signs of age throughout, all consistent with its vintage nature.
A particularly attractive example of interwar British furniture: compact, practical and beautifully made, with the rounded profile and warm golden oak giving it a strong yet understated Art Deco character.
British, circa 1930s.
