A beautifully proportioned English oak dining table dating from the early 20th century, with a wonderfully simple trestle construction characteristic of the Arts & Crafts movement.

The rectangular top is constructed from broad solid oak boards, displaying lovely natural variation in colour and grain. Particularly attractive is the contrast between the individual boards, with areas of pronounced figuring and a lighter band of oak running through the top. The result is a wonderfully characterful surface that celebrates the natural qualities of the timber.

The base is particularly appealing. At either end, pairs of square-section uprights rise from broad, subtly shaped feet and are connected by a long central stretcher. Small shaped brackets beneath the tabletop provide an understated decorative detail while retaining the honest, functional quality associated with Arts & Crafts furniture.

Despite its substantial oak construction, the table has a surprisingly light and elegant appearance. The open trestle base, slender uprights and gently projecting feet create a strong architectural silhouette without feeling heavy.

At 122cm long and 75cm deep, it is a particularly useful size for modern living: comfortably accommodating four for everyday dining while remaining compact enough for a kitchen, dining area or smaller open-plan space.

Vintage Condition
In lovely restored condition, the oak has developed a warm, mellow colour through age, with variations in tone, old marks and gentle wear consistent with more than a century of use. We have carefully retained this character rather than attempting to make the table appear overly restored.
There is a small, sympathetic repair to the tabletop where a piece of oak has been spliced in to replace a small area of loss. The repair remains visible on close inspection and forms part of the table’s history. Please see the photographs for further detail.

A lovely example of understated English Arts & Crafts furniture – beautifully straightforward in its construction, full of character and exceptionally usable.

Drawers may need new runners, handles can be missing or damaged, and joints may require repair or reinforcement. We look beyond the surface to uncover hidden defects, ensuring each piece is restored to work as it was originally intended.
