A wonderfully characterful mid-century telephone seat dating from the 1960s, combining seating, concealed storage and a useful side cupboard within an exceptionally compact design.
The piece has a particularly attractive asymmetrical form, with a large sweeping back panel extending behind the seat and terminating in softly rounded corners. Alongside sits a raised cupboard, originally providing a convenient surface for the telephone, with a beautifully simple recessed timber handle.
The hinged seat lifts to reveal a shallow concealed storage compartment beneath, while the adjoining cupboard provides considerably more useful storage. At just 28cm deep, the whole piece has an unusually slender footprint, making it particularly well suited to a hallway or entrance space today.
The warm-toned teak and teak veneer has developed a lovely mellow colour, complemented by darker tapered legs and framing. The restrained detailing, clean lines and gently sculpted profile are characteristic of British furniture design of the period.
Carefully restored in our workshop and presented in excellent vintage condition. The teak has been gently cleaned and refinished to revive its warm, mellow colour while retaining the subtle variations, minor marks and signs of age that give the piece its character. The seat pad has been newly reupholstered in a neutral woven fabric, chosen to complement the warmth of the timber. As with all of our vintage furniture, there are some gentle traces of previous use remaining, but these sit comfortably within the overall finish. Please take a close look through all photographs, as these form an important part of the description.
Although originally designed as a telephone seat, it works beautifully today as a hallway seat, compact entryway bench or bedroom piece, providing somewhere to sit together with useful concealed storage and a surface for a lamp, keys or decorative objects.
A particularly appealing piece of practical mid-century furniture, with an unusual architectural silhouette and a remarkably compact footprint.

Our restoration process
Preparation
We carefully assess every piece, identifying any damage, repairs or replacement parts it may need. Drawers may need new runners, handles can be missing or damaged, and joints may require repair or reinforcement. We look beyond the surface to uncover hidden defects, ensuring each piece is restored to work as it was originally intended.
Restoration
With over 20 years of experience, we know that the right restoration techniques can make all the difference. It’s a delicate process that takes patience, skill and attention to detail — one we’ve taken the time to perfect. Each piece is carefully and sensitively restored, preserving its original character and charm while giving it a new lease of life.
Finishing
Finally, we add the finishing touches — whether that’s painting, oiling or sealing, fitting new handles, hinges or catches, or simply giving the piece a final clean and polish. We make sure every piece is ready for modern living, giving it a new lease of life and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to be loved for generations to come.
Before and after
