A handsome early 20th century English oak bureau, dating from around the 1920s and displaying subtle Arts & Crafts influences.

Beautifully made in warm, richly figured oak, the bureau has a wonderfully simple form, with a panelled fall front, three graduated drawers and a distinctive shaped apron below. The oak has developed a lovely mellow golden colour, with plenty of variation and character to the grain.

The fall opens to form a generous writing surface, supported by traditional pull-out lopers to either side. Inside is a particularly attractive fitted arrangement of pigeonholes and shelves, with gently shaped openings adding a decorative detail to the otherwise restrained design.

Below are three useful graduated drawers, traditionally dovetailed and fitted with elegant brass swan-neck handles and individual locks. The combination of the delicate brass fittings and beautifully figured oak gives the bureau a particularly refined appearance.

A lovely example of practical British furniture from the early 20th century, with an appealing simplicity that allows it to sit comfortably in both period and contemporary interiors. Its compact footprint makes it especially useful for modern homes – ideal as a writing desk or occasional workspace while providing plenty of useful storage when closed.

The bureau retains the marks, variations and gentle signs of wear acquired through many years of use, all contributing to its character and warm aged appearance.

Preparation

We carefully assess every piece, identifying any damage, repairs or replacement parts it may need. Drawers may need new runners, handles can be missing or damaged, and joints may require repair or reinforcement. We look beyond the surface to uncover hidden defects, ensuring each piece is restored to work as it was originally intended.
