A wonderfully characterful early 20th-century pine cupboard, combining a tall glazed upper section with a deeper enclosed cupboard below.
The cabinet has a beautifully simple, utilitarian quality, with its restrained construction and lack of unnecessary decoration giving it a particularly appealing vernacular feel. The pine has developed a lovely pale, mellow appearance through age, with natural variations in colour, grain, old marks and wear throughout.
The upper section is unusually shallow, with a pair of glazed doors opening to reveal four fixed shelves. At just 22cm deep overall, this part of the cabinet has an elegant, almost architectural quality and provides useful display storage without making the piece feel imposing. A simple moulded cornice finishes the cabinet above.
Below, the deeper base projects forward and is enclosed by a pair of solid panelled doors. Inside is a removable shelf, allowing the lower cupboard to accommodate larger items when required. Simple wooden block handles, a shaped lower apron and small details to the construction add to its understated charm.
We believe the cupboard dates from the early decades of the 20th century and was most likely intended for domestic storage, perhaps in a kitchen or housekeeper's pantry. Its exact original purpose is unknown, however, and we rather like the honesty of leaving its history open rather than giving it an overly specific attribution.
Today it would make an exceptionally useful piece of storage. Its narrow upper section is ideal for displaying ceramics, glassware or favourite objects, while the deeper cupboard below provides concealed storage. Equally at home in a kitchen or dining room, it would also make a lovely linen or bathroom cupboard.
The cabinet retains the knocks, marks, tonal variation and surface wear accumulated through many decades of use. We have deliberately retained this character rather than attempting to make the pine appear new or overly restored.

Our restoration process
Preparation
We carefully assess every piece, identifying any damage, repairs or replacement parts it may need. Drawers may need new runners, handles can be missing or damaged, and joints may require repair or reinforcement. We look beyond the surface to uncover hidden defects, ensuring each piece is restored to work as it was originally intended.
Restoration
With over 20 years of experience, we know that the right restoration techniques can make all the difference. It’s a delicate process that takes patience, skill and attention to detail — one we’ve taken the time to perfect. Each piece is carefully and sensitively restored, preserving its original character and charm while giving it a new lease of life.
Finishing
Finally, we add the finishing touches — whether that’s painting, oiling or sealing, fitting new handles, hinges or catches, or simply giving the piece a final clean and polish. We make sure every piece is ready for modern living, giving it a new lease of life and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to be loved for generations to come.
Before and after
Each piece is carefully and sympathetically restored to preserve the character, charm and beautiful details that make it unique. The result is a truly individual piece of furniture, thoughtfully restored for
modern living and ready to bring warmth, personality and timeless style to your home for years to come.
