A beautifully proportioned early 20th-century Arts and Crafts oak cabinet, believed to date from around the 1930s, combining wonderfully shaped sides, beautifully figured oak and elegant handcrafted detailing.

With its distinctive Arts and Crafts design, this charming cabinet has a wonderfully understated elegance. The gently shaped sides rise above the open upper shelf, with softly rounded corners and a stepped profile, while the graceful curved apron beneath adds a lovely finishing touch to its otherwise clean, architectural lines.

The beautifully figured oak door panel is particularly striking, with its wonderfully expressive grain giving the cabinet a lovely sense of individuality without the need for elaborate ornamentation. The elegantly carved wooden door knob is another particularly charming detail, with its distinctive stepped, architectural form reflecting the craftsmanship and understated elegance of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The oak has a beautiful warm, golden colour, with lovely variations in tone and grain throughout. The richly figured central door panel contrasts beautifully with the straighter grain of the surrounding timber, creating a wonderfully decorative yet harmonious appearance.

The practical design features an open upper shelf, ideal for displaying books, ceramics or favourite decorative objects, with a spacious cupboard beneath. The single panelled door opens to reveal a useful storage compartment with a fixed internal shelf, providing plenty of room for everyday essentials.

– A Lovely History

This charming cabinet has a particularly interesting history, having originally formed part of the bedroom furnishings of a historic British educational institution.

We understand that the building was formerly used to provide residential accommodation for trainee nurses, with matching cabinets furnished throughout the bedrooms. Remarkably, these lovely pieces remained in their original setting for many years before being carefully removed and brought to our workshop for restoration.

Believed to date from around the 1930s, the cabinet's beautifully restrained Arts and Crafts design and practical construction are wonderfully characteristic of furniture produced during this period.

– Beautifully Restored Condition

This lovely cabinet is presented in excellent restored condition. The oak has been sympathetically refinished, bringing out its beautiful golden colour, attractive natural grain and the particularly striking figuring of the central door panel.

The restoration has given the cabinet a lovely fresh appearance while retaining all the charm and character of its early 20th-century design. Just a few minor polished-in marks, scuffs and gentle signs of age remain, all part of its authentic vintage character. The decorative carved wooden door knob retains its attractive aged character, complementing the beautifully restored timber.

Please take a close look through all photographs, as these form an important part of the description and show the condition, finish and character of the piece in greater detail.

Incredibly versatile, this charming oak cabinet would make a wonderful addition to a hallway, living room or bedroom. The open upper shelf provides a lovely space for displaying books, ceramics and favourite decorative objects, while the cupboard beneath offers useful concealed storage. With its generous width, relatively shallow depth and beautifully understated Arts and Crafts design, it's a piece that would sit effortlessly in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

A beautifully individual piece of early 20th-century furniture, combining timeless Arts and Crafts design, wonderful oak grain, elegant craftsmanship and a fascinating history.

– Matching Cabinet Available

We are delighted to have a second matching cabinet available, also beautifully restored in our workshop. These lovely pieces would look particularly wonderful as a pair, either side of a bed or sofa, although each is available to purchase individually. Drawers may need new runners, handles can be missing or damaged, and joints may require repair or reinforcement. We look beyond the surface to uncover hidden defects, ensuring each piece is restored to work as it was originally intended.
