The Lockdown Collection – designed & produced in Lockdown!
Introducing the 'Lockdown' Collection - designed and handcrafted by us here at Mustard Vintage while in Lockdown!
They say that great things come from adversity, and we feel really proud of what we have achieved with this piece. What makes it unique is that it is handcrafted entirely from reclaimed materials rescued from a local school which was due for demolition.
The Back Story
During lockdown our usual sources of furniture were closed, and we had to think out of the box, FAST! So, when we got the opportunity to salvage old furniture and materials from a nearby school, we took the bull by the horns, and literally ripped out everything we could get our hands on. This unique cabinet is the first of many pieces that we will be creating with the materials we salvaged. We hope you love it as much as we enjoyed the process of designing and creating it.
The Reclaimed Materials
What makes these pieces so striking is that the doors of the cabinets have been made using using solid beech 'Junckers' gym flooring. Each board features striking markings, colours and patina - making each cabinet completely unique! The rest of the piece has been constructed using other reclaimed wood salvaged from the school - including old bookcases and laboratory furniture, which we have broken down and reused.
The Design Inspiration
When designing this piece, we took inspiration from some of our favourite iconic Mid Century school pieces by manufacturers such as Esavian. The carcass features lovely design details such as exposed dovetail joints and beautiful beveled edges. The door fronts include a simplistic inset/cutaway handle. The end result is a stunning cabinet that delivers it's own unique character, story and charm.
A Sustainable & Environmentally Friendly Option
Here at Mustard Vintage we LOVE to use reclaimed materials, not only do they look great aesthetically, but they are also kinder to our environment. All the materials used to construct this cabinet (apart from the hinges and metal parts) have been made using 100% reclaimed materials - how amazing is that?
Condition & Finish
Sanded back and refinished with a hard wearing oil resulting in rich, warm satin finish. All the wood used is reclaimed and has had years of use in schools so they do come with imperfections. They will have polished in marks and scratches, the odd dink here and there, but this all adds to their character and charm. Using reclaimed materials gives a unique aged look - something that modern furniture cannot replicate.
