Mid Century Teak Bookcase & Storage Unit 0310c
Tax included
A beautifully proportioned mid-century teak bookcase and storage unit by Herbert E. Gibbs Limited, dating from the 1960s.
Tall and elegantly understated, the piece combines generous open shelving with enclosed storage above and below, all within a remarkably slim footprint. Its clean lines, warm teak and restrained detailing are characteristic of British mid-century furniture, with the Scandinavian influence that became such an important part of post-war British design.
The upper section incorporates a useful cupboard enclosed by a pair of sliding doors, each finished with a simple recessed timber handle. Below are three generous open display areas, providing plenty of space for books, ceramics, artwork and decorative objects. One of the shelves is adjustable, allowing the arrangement to be altered to suit different uses.
At the base is a deeper cupboard, again enclosed by sliding teak doors with matching recessed handles. This provides a substantial amount of concealed storage while also creating a useful surface immediately above
The full-height sides give the piece a particularly architectural quality, with gently rounded transitions where the deeper lower cabinet meets the shallower shelving above. The warm teak and teak veneers have developed a lovely mellow colour, with attractive grain and gentle signs of age and use throughout.
At 184cm high but only 26cm deep through the upper section, it offers an impressive amount of storage and display space without feeling visually heavy or occupying excessive floor space.
In excellent restored condition, there are some minor age related marks as to be expected for its age. The lower rear section has been sympathetically modified by a previous owner to accommodate a skirting board, allowing the unit to sit more closely against a wall. This is a later alteration rather than part of the original construction.
Purchased alongside a matching Herbert E. Gibbs bureau bookcase of identical width and height, the two pieces make particularly attractive companion units and can work beautifully together, while each remains a very practical and complete piece in its own right.
A handsome and highly usable example of British mid-century furniture, equally suited to a living room, dining room, home office or study.

Finishing
Finally, we add the finishing touches — whether that’s painting, oiling or sealing, fitting new handles, hinges or catches, or simply giving the piece a final clean and polish. We make sure every piece is ready for modern living, giving it a new lease of life and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to be loved for generations to come.
