Antique Oak School Storage Cupboard Kitchen Larder 0310l
Tax included
A handsome and substantial early 20th-century school cupboard by The North of England School Furnishing Company Ltd of Darlington, retaining its original maker’s label beneath the cornice.
Originally produced for institutional use, the cupboard has a wonderfully straightforward and practical construction, with a richly toned oak exterior and lighter secondary timbers used internally. The oak has developed a beautiful depth and variation of colour over the years, retaining the knocks, marks and gentle wear associated with a piece of working furniture of this age.
The front is particularly attractive, with a pair of tall doors each divided into six recessed panels. A gently projecting moulded cornice sits above, balanced by a simple plinth below, giving the cupboard a strong architectural presence without unnecessary ornamentation.
Inside are five full-width shelves creating six generous storage compartments. The interior retains its pleasingly utilitarian character, with lighter timber and time-worn surfaces providing a lovely contrast to the deeper tones of the oak exterior.
Its original purpose translates remarkably well to contemporary interiors. Despite providing a considerable amount of storage, the main body is only 40cm deep, making it particularly practical where floor space is limited. It would work beautifully as a kitchen or pantry cupboard, linen cupboard, studio storage or general household cabinet.
Restoration Work
New roller catches have been fitted to ensure the doors open and close smoothly and securely. The cupboard has been fitted with a new plywood back, providing a clean and sturdy replacement. The piece has been carefully cleaned and oiled, preserving its original patina and enhancing the character and beauty of the oak.
Vintage Condition
Presented in excellent original condition, the cupboard displays the expected signs of age and use, including knocks, marks and areas of wear. These tell the story of its working life and add to its authentic charm. Please take a look at the photographs for more detail.
A wonderfully characterful piece of early British institutional furniture, combining generous storage with simple, robust construction and beautifully aged oak.

About the North of England School Furnishing Company Ltd
The North of England School Furnishing Company began in 1876 with the Religious Tract Society, founded at the suggestion of John Pease of East Mount. Its original aim was to spread religious literature, but it soon expanded into producing school books and, eventually, school furniture.
The company grew into a major manufacturer, with large works on East Mount Road and Kinross Street. Sadly, in January 1889, much of the site was badly damaged by fire.
