A wonderfully characterful antique mahogany chest of drawers, believed to date from the late Georgian to early Victorian period, around 1820–1850.
Beautifully proportioned, this charming little chest features two short drawers above three graduated full-width drawers, each fitted with traditional brass swan-neck handles and decorative keyhole escutcheons. The chest stands on attractive shaped bracket feet, while the gently moulded top and simple, elegant lines give it a timeless appeal.
A particularly lovely feature is the pull-out brushing slide, discreetly positioned just beneath the top and lined in traditional green baize. Originally intended as a convenient surface for brushing, folding and arranging clothing, it is a charming reminder of the chest's history and remains a wonderfully practical feature today.
The mahogany has developed a beautifully rich, mellow colour over the years, with lovely variations in tone, darker areas of patina and the gentle marks and imperfections that make antique furniture so appealing. The traditional construction, including dovetailed drawers and boarded back, further adds to its character.
– Beautiful Antique Character
Presented in lovely antique condition, with the expected marks, scratches, wear and signs of previous use accumulated over its long life. These have been sympathetically retained, preserving the warmth and authentic character of the piece. The green baize lining shows signs of age and use, in keeping with the overall character of the chest. Please take a close look through all photographs, as these form an important part of the description and show its condition and character in greater detail.
With its unusually compact proportions, this would make a fabulous bedroom chest, substantial bedside piece or characterful storage in a hallway or living room. The five drawers provide plenty of practical storage, while the brushing slide offers a useful additional surface for laying out jewellery, accessories or other personal belongings.
A beautiful, understated piece of antique furniture, full of warmth, history and character.
