A beautifully designed and handcrafted original mid-century church pew, with a wonderfully architectural form that sets it apart from more traditional ecclesiastical furniture.
– Excellent restored condition
Crafted from a striking combination of solid beech and sapele, the contrasting timbers work beautifully together. The real feature, however, is the superb sculptural base: the splayed solid beech legs taper elegantly upwards into a single form, creating a distinctive silhouette that feels unmistakably mid-century. The seat is made from two substantial pieces of solid sapele, finished with a softly rounded front edge.
Simple, beautifully proportioned and incredibly versatile, these benches translate effortlessly into a contemporary interior. They would make fabulous hallway or boot-room seating, work beautifully alongside a dining table or in a kitchen, and would be equally at home as statement seating in a restaurant, bar, café or retail space.
What makes these pews particularly special is their provenance. They were reclaimed directly from Hearsall Baptist Church in Earlsdon, Coventry, together with several complementary pieces featuring the same distinctive leg design. The church was built in 1960 in a striking modernist style, and its architectural influence can clearly be seen in the clean lines and thoughtful design of the original furniture.
Now carefully restored and presented in excellent condition, these are wonderful examples of purposeful mid-century design – beautifully made, highly practical and with a genuine history and provenance that makes each one all the more interesting.
