A wonderfully characterful late 18th-century Welsh oak potboard dresser, dating to the George III period, circa 1780, with beautiful proportions and over two centuries of naturally acquired colour and patina.
The dresser has an unusual and particularly attractive five-drawer arrangement, with three long frieze drawers above two smaller drawers. Each is framed with contrasting walnut crossbanding, adding just the right amount of decorative detail while retaining the understated simplicity associated with traditional Welsh country furniture.
A beautifully shaped scalloped apron sits below, with square legs leading down to the broad boarded potboard. Originally designed for storing pots and kitchen wares, this open lower section remains wonderfully practical today and gives the dresser its distinctive, well-balanced proportions.
Above is an open oak plate rack with three generous shelves, a central upright and shaped frieze beneath the moulded cornice. The rack sits loosely on the dresser top, as is traditional with furniture of this type, and has a later discreet wall restraint for added security.
For us, however, the real beauty of this dresser lies in its exceptional surface. The oak has mellowed into rich shades of chestnut, deep brown and warm honey, with generations of use creating areas of gentle wear and revealing glimpses of the lighter timber beneath. The knocks, marks, variations in colour and subtle movement of the old boards are an integral part of its story and give it the kind of character that simply cannot be recreated.
The dresser is believed to be Welsh, probably South Wales, although without documentary provenance we prefer not to make a more specific regional attribution. The plate rack is entirely appropriate in character and sits beautifully with the base, although we cannot confirm that the two have remained together since they were originally made.
A fabulous piece of 18th-century country furniture that manages to be both highly decorative and genuinely useful. It would make a wonderful focal point in a kitchen or dining room, filled with favourite ceramics and glassware, or could equally provide generous storage and display in a living space.
Very good antique condition, with extensive historic wear, marks, colour variation and movement consistent with more than 200 years of age and use. A later wall restraint has been added to the rack for security.
Please take a close look through all photographs, as these form an important part of the description and show the condition, surface and wonderful character of the piece in greater detail.
