A lovely vintage West German pottery jug, believed to date from the 1960s–1970s, with a rich chocolate-brown glaze and a wonderfully unusual incised deer design.
The jug has a softly rounded body, a generous curved handle and a little pouring lip. The stylised deer sits amongst sweeping foliage, with decorative crosshatched detailing adding to its rustic, almost folk-art feel. We particularly love the contrasting cream-coloured bands around the shoulders and base, with their finely textured, chattering-style decoration giving the piece another layer of interest.
The underside is marked HANDARBEIT (handmade), together with the number 91, although the maker remains unknown.
