A stunning extra large vintage Kokeshi Doll from Japan who we've named Nakano (meaning famous female warrior). Hand turned and painted with a beautiful monochrome pattern.
This is the largest Kokeshi doll we've come across (and the heaviest!) and it would make a striking feature in any room. Nakano is magnificent!
Styling Tips
Vintage Kokeshi dolls are highly collectable and great pieces to add to your vintage/eclectic interiors. They look stunning practically anywhere in the home - either as single pieces or displayed in a cluster. Kokeshi Dolls
Kokeshi dolls were said to be guardians of children and keepers of their souls, watching over the children as they grew up. There are varying stories relating to their origin and purpose - some say they were given by talisman to ensure the healthy birth of a new child, others say they were given out to school children as reward dolls by teachers. However, others say they were given to mark the death of a child due to illness, miscarriage or famine - and that the soul of the child remains in the doll. We are not sure which we believe, but one thing we do know, is we love them and we've kept two for ourselves!
