A beautiful and scarcely seen, Irish famine or hedge chair.

19th Century constructed from solid elm with comb back and splayed legs. Very rare to see an example with the extra graduating tier back rest. Original green painted finish which has worn beautifully creating a stunning patina.

The origin of the name “famine chair” is said to relate to the Great Famine in Ireland (1845-1852), during which the great poverty of the country resulted in furniture being hand made by tenant farmers, consequently, few examples have survived.

Excellent condition - very sturdy with original finish.
